Dear Joyce Carol,

I have not yet rec’d your letter & am wondering if my letter sent

16 days ago has been rec’d by you? It will be a loss to me, if your

picture from the Boise newspaper is not returned. Joyce Carol, I

did not wish to embarass, to say how special that picture was, tho’

we are Strangers across a thousand miles, and more, & how

anxious I am, to hear from you.

This time I am sending a Drawing of you, that I have done

myself. This likeness is taken from a picture of you on the back

cover of a Novel of yours here, that I have been reading with

much amazement & certitude, that you are the writer to tell the

lifestory of Esdra Abraham Meech, like no other. Joyce Carol, it is

our destiny! I am sure of this.

I hope that this Portrait will not be offenseful to you, Joyce

Carol. It has been said of me that I have Artistic skills, & certain

persons I have drawn Portraits of, are very complimentary especially

women & girls, for which I have more skill, than for men. Why this

is, I dont know! Except where the Portrait is a beautiful likeness, as

in this Drawing of you, Joyce Carol, it is like a Stranger’s hand takes
